Current Measurement

How to Measure Current

Current can be measured by adding an ammeter in path of electrical circuit.

In above example to measure current we have cut the wire and pass through the Ammeter. In ammeter current sensor/Shunt is used to measure current.

Ammeter Connections

Right image show the probes position in current measurement. In current measurement ideal multimeter or ammeter acts as short circuit means no voltage drop occurs across connected probes.

Technical Note

In an ideal ammeter, the resistance is zero, which means it acts as a short circuit and does not affect the circuit being measured.

Key Points to Remember

  • Current is always measured in series with the load
  • The circuit must be broken to insert the ammeter
  • Ammeter has very low internal resistance
  • Select appropriate current range on the multimeter
  • Observe proper polarity when connecting probes
  • Ensure safety by turning off power before making connections

Types of Current Measurement

Direct Measurement

Using ammeter in series with the circuit

Indirect Measurement

Using clamp meter or current transformer
